MinebeaMitsumi Group Holds Internal Seminar on DEI Promotion
-Building an Inclusive Workplace with Opportunities for Growth-

As part of the company's DEI promotion initiatives 2024, MinebeaMitsumi held three rounds of internal seminars aimed at shifting the general mindset towards women empowerment from October to December 2024. Through this seminar, current managers gained deeper insights into the importance of diversity-friendly corporate culture, while female management candidates received inspiring messages about the sense of fulfillment of leadership roles, driving a positive shift in attitudes towards women's participation in leadership positions.

We believe that a corporate culture of creating new value by actively welcoming differences is the foundation of our INTEGRATION* activities. Based on this concept, we promote diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI).

* INTEGRATION: This term was adopted with the intended meaning "to be combined" rather than "to sum up." Create new value through synergy by combining all the resources of our group.

With the support from our outside directors, we held three rounds of seminars aimed at shifting the mindset among the current managers and management candidates. These seminars provided valuable opportunities for participants to explore practical actions they can take from their perspectives to establish a women-friendly workplace environment.

The 1st seminar: "Self-Directed Career Development and Women Empowerment" (held on October 4, 2024)

Joined by a large number of our female employees, this seminar was held in two sessions with the following three objectives:

  1. To foster awareness of self-directed career development
  2. To discuss on actions that can be taken to enhance performance of female members in our company
  3. To share the change in the company's approach

In the first session, Outside Director, Ms. Atsuko Matsumura engaged in a dialogue with the facilitator, sharing her personal experiences about key principles she prioritizes in career development, as well as the importance of setting a role model.

The second session was joined by two of our female management members, who participated in a panel discussion on key principles they prioritize in their career development, the challenges they have faced, and changes they experienced following their promotions. This discussion by the three panelists helped participants recognize unconscious bias and highlighted the importance of active communication for mutual understanding.

We were pleased to receive positive feedback from the post-seminar questionnaire conducted for participants:

  • — "It was encouraging to hear the career journeys of three female members and how they have navigated their career development without gender-based bias."
  • — "I was able to relate my experience to theirs. One day, I would love to be a leader like them."

The 2nd seminar: "DEI Promotion as Management Strategy" (held on November 6, 2024)

Targeted at all members in management positions, this seminar was held in two sessions with the following two objectives:

  1. To provide deeper insight into the point of DEI
  2. To encourage transformation in management approach

The seminar kicked off with a video message from Mr.Katsuhiko Yoshida, COO & CFO MinebeaMitsumi Inc, highlighting the importance of DEI promotion as part of the company's strategy, as well as the purpose of this seminar and his expectation for the management team.

In the first session, Outside Director, Ms. Yuko Miyazaki engaged in a dialogue talk with the facilitator about reasons why DEI promotion is essential in Japanese society and company management. She explained that the essence of DEI is reflected in Article 14, Paragraph 1, and Article 13 from the Constitution of Japan, which emphasizes "respect for the individual." She also pointed out that creating values requires not only diversity, but also inclusion.

The second session was joined by two of our officers and presented a panel discussion about objectives of DEI promotion and the actions required from officers to transform our organization. Through the discussion, the three panelists concluded that listening to others with an open mind, using imagination, and being aware of unconscious bias are crucial.

We were pleased to receive positive feedback from the post-seminar questionnaire conducted for participants:

  • — "Since the discussion included their personal experiences, it felt realistic and was informative for me."
  • — "Our company needs to improve overall awareness of inclusion, particularly among management members."

Since the 3rd seminar was held online, we were pleased to host many members across our domestic sites. This seminar was conducted in two sessions with the following three objectives:

  1. To raise awareness about the importance of taking a proactive approach to one's career and the necessary preparations for it.
  2. To understand the impact of a company with diverse talent and opportunities it provides on an individual's career.
  3. To gain new perspectives and insights on career development through dialogue with employees from other departments.
We also welcomed Ms. Shizuka Shimizu, CEO and Representative Director of Funleash Inc. as the facilitator for this seminar.

The first session featured three of our employees with diverse career experiences, who presented a panel discussion on their motivation for joining our company, its appeal, memorable events, rewarding moments, and the values or principles they prioritize in their career development. Through the discussion, they shared the importance of adapting to change flexibly while keeping one's non-negotiable values at the core in order to shape a career that is true to oneself.

In the second session, we held an interactive session where questions were shared among participants and their answers were consolidated. The results showed that 40% of the participants had already given serious thought to their career direction in order to realize it, while 60% expressed interest in building a career in management. The breakout room session that followed saw active discussions under the theme of "Actions to be taken to realize a career that is true to yourself." Participants were able to reaffirm the importance of improving their own skills to be well-prepared for daily opportunities, regardless of career path they pursue.

We were pleased to receive positive comments from the post-seminar questionnaire conducted for participants:

Our Past DEI Promotion Initiatives and Next Step

Since the fiscal year 2020, we have consistently held seminars and networking events aimed at raising awareness and understanding of DEI. These events aim to create a workplace where INTEGRATION of people is practiced, meaning the diverse abilities, experiences, and values of each employee are appreciated. In the fiscal year 2024, HR System Reform Project Team under President's supervision established the Human Resources Management Policy, and publicly declared our commitment to treating our employees fairly based on their evaluation results and providing opportunities for their growth, regardless of one's nationality, sex, age, education background, and the like. Moreover, we have set a goal of achieving 8% female representation in management positions by the end of FY 2028 as a KPI (MinebeaMitsumi alone), as we see creating a women-friendly work environment as an imminent task. With the support from our Outside Directors, we are committed to doing everything we can to achieve the goal.

Through this seminar, we provided participants with an opportunity to share key insights on DEI promotion, including the effectiveness of recognizing unconscious bias and engaging in appropriate dialogue, the crucial role of mindset shifts among management, and the importance of all employees—not just women—shaping careers that are true to themselves

Our company group will continue to pass down our manufacturing DNA cultivated over more than 70-plus years to the next generation, and promote INTEGRATION initiatives with each employee's unique "passion" as the driver. We believe this will pave the way for our greater growth as an INTERGRATED precision components manufacturer, supporting global manufacturing and enriching people's daily lives.
